Motivating the Dissemination of Extensive Reading Method

Abstract

Since 2019, the educational organization “Lingors” has organized a total of 35 Extensive Reading (ER) marathons with the support of English teachers, aiming to promote the ER approach. However, a key challenge faced by teachers is increasing students’ reading interest and encouraging them to read English books voluntarily, in line with ER tenets, thereby fostering lifelong reading habits. To explore “nudge” or motivational strategies that positively influence participants’ behavior, a quantitative comparative study was conducted using data from 17 reading marathons organized by “Lingors” in 2024–2025. Marathon data were analyzed using the organization’s official Microsoft Power BI platform. The study found that, regardless of marathon type, promoting ER through competition-based formats aligned with Mongolian students’ learning characteristics is the most effective approach. Moreover, the 17 marathons held over the last two years engaged a total of 38,160 readers, marking the highest participation since 2019. This demonstrates that motivation strategies tailored to marathon features and participants’ needs significantly enhance reading interest. Among regular marathon participants, a few students achieved scores of 8.0 or higher on international language exams such as IELTS and TOEFL, confirming that the ER method not only improves reading skills but also contributes to long-term language acquisition as well as reading culture, and lifelong reading habits. Finally, the researchers recommend some “nudges”, supported by both domestic and international experiences, that are effective in increasing students’ reading interest.
